Raymond F. Batty

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Raymond F. Batty, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy on 14 January 1945. Lieutenant Batty was serving as Bombardier-Navigator of a B-26 type aircraft dispatched to bomb the Bullay railroad bridge in Germany. Over the target area intense anti-aircraft fire was encountered and weather conditions were extremely unfavorable; however, Lieutenant Batty identified the objective despite the enemy fire and poor visibility and led the flight directly over the target and all bombs were released with devastating effect thereon. By his skill as a Bombardier, aggressiveness and determination, Lieutenant Batty materially aided in the destruction of a vital link in enemy transportation and reflects great credit upon himself and his organization.
