Thomas C. Agnew

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Thomas C. Agnew for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam, Warrant Officer Agnew distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 July 1969 while serving as Aircraft Commander with Company C, 229th Aviation Battalion (assault helicopter) (Airmobile) during a combat assault in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. While enroute to the landing zone, the entire flight of six aircraft began to receive intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. While attempting to evade, the flight flew into the fire of three machine gun positions. Immediately, the first three aircraft in the formation were hit with a heavy volume of accurate fire. In spite of the intense fire in the area, Warrant Officer Agnew maneuvered his heavily laden aircraft into position and skillfully hovered a few inches above the ground while the troops deployed. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
