Thomas G. Everhart Jr.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas G. Everhart for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 20 February 1969. Captain Everhart distinguished himself while serving as an Aircraft Commander and Leader of the second flight on a combat assault on Landing Zone Blitz, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Everhart was alerted by the Command and Control helicopter that an emergency condition existed in the landing zone. The second aircraft of the first flight had been destroyed by a command detonated mine upon landing and, the mine had wounded many of the personnel on board. The other helicopters in the flight were told not to land and were withdrawn to an orbit area. Captain Everhart, with his troops still on board, noted the stricken ship and, without regard for his own safety, started into the landing zone. After finding a safe place to land and allow the troops to get off the aircraft, he carefully hovered his aircraft over the mined landing zone to extract the wounded. When all the wounded were on board, the aircraft left the area to deliver the casualties to medical care at the nearest hospital. Captain Everhart’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
