Carl E. Fleece

Captain Carl E. Fleece is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights from 18 November 1957 to 20 October 1958. During this perod, as Pilot of Crew Number 46, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Captain Fleece directly contributed to his crew achieving the highest proficiency status of the Strategic Air Command within six months of the formation of his crew Despite extreme pressure conditions, Captain Fleece’s crew achieved international acclaim by winning both the Royal Air Force and the Tenth Annual Strategic Air Command competitions in combined bombing and navigation techniques, a feat never before accomplished by the Air Force. This extraordinary record was accomplished despite the fact that none of the personnel had ever served as crew members on the same crew and had utilized a comparatively new aircraft to achieve the record. The distinctive and creditable aerial accomplishments of Captain Fleece reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
