Herbert L. Eggleston, Jr.

First Lieutenant Herbert L. Eggleston is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. Participating in an armored division cooperation mission on 13 April 1945, Lieutenant Eggleston’s courage and determination in braving highly adverse weather conditions and heavy ground fire made possible the elimination of a road block and the dissipation of enemy armored and infantry elements which were holding up the advance of allied armored combat commands. Carrying out relentless bombing and strafing attacks, Lieutenant Eggleston personally destroyed one enemy tank, so damaged another that it was abandoned by its crew and inflicted heavy casualties on enemy personnel. His outstanding aerial skill and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
