Robert L. Eigel

Captain Robert L. Eigel is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130E Aircraft Commander at Mount Coto, Republic of Vietnam, on 17 November 1968. On that date, Captain Eigel and his crew performed an urgent airdrop of sixty-four Vietnamese Montagnard paratroopers during a joint United States, Vietnamese assault operation against heavily fortified hostile forces deployed at Mount Coto. In spite of the hazards of intense hostile fire, combat damage to his aircraft and the jamming of a paratroop door, Captain Eigel demonstrated extraordinary determination and resourcefulness and performed his duties in a manner which made possible the success of this vital mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Eigel reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
