- Robert E. Zimmerman
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert E. Zimmerman for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 18 August 1972. On that date, Captain Zimmerman was flying in support of friendly ground units in Sector One, Republic of South Vietnam. A tactical emergency was in progress when Captain Zimmerman arrived on scene. Quickly analyzing the situation, and in spite of marginal weather, Captain Zimmerman directed airstrikes on enemy targets and was directly responsible for one heavy field artillery piece destroyed, three heavy field artillery pieces damaged and two secondary explosions. His efforts enabled friendly forces to hold a strategic position and saved the lives of many friendly troops. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Zimmerman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
