Wallace T. Foerste

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Wallace T. Foerste for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Foerste distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a transport helicopter. While exiting a pick-up zone, the Pilot was hit in the neck and the aircraft was heavily damaged. Captain Foerste grabbed the controls and succeeded in crash-landing the aircraft, saving the lives of the crew and seven soldiers. Due to heavy contact he decided to set up security and apply first aid to the wounded until an adequate perimeter could be provided to allow lift ships to make a safe approach and evacuate the casualties. His display of courage and decisiveness under fire were exemplary. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
