Henry M. Donaldson

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Henry M. Donaldson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Felei Klong, Republic of Vietnam on 26 March 1968. On that date, a large hostile force had assaulted a United States infantry fire support base, and the friendly forces were in imminent danger of being completely overrun. Major Donaldson displayed truly remarkable courage and tenacity as he repeatedly flew his aircraft low over the area to mark the hostile positions for tactical aircraft. His heroic actions were instrumental in completely disorganizing and routing the heavily armed hostile forces, inflicting heavy casualties upon them and saving many friendly lives. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Donaldson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, he flew in support of friendly units which were pinned down by large and heavily armed hostile forces. Marking targets and directing the delivery of ordnance with extraordinary precision and skill, he was instrumental in turning the tide of battle in favor of the friendly forces. His expertise in controlling a complicated battlefield situation resulted in the saving of many friendly lives. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Donaldson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
