Albert W. Fitzgerald

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Albert W. Fitzgerald for heroism while participating in aerial flight above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Fitzgerald distinguished himself on 7 January 1967. He was assigned the mission of helicopter gun ship standby. At approximately 0130 hours Camp Holloway Army Airfield came under intense enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire. As the first barrage of enemy mortar fire landed on the airfield, he proceeded to his aircraft. Immediately after clearing the runway, he assisted in locating the enemy mortar positions and the gun ship plunged to the attack utilizing his weapons system, which resulted in a tremendous secondary explosion that silenced two mortar positions. He then maneuvered his aircraft over the other positions while he assisted in successfully providing timely and accurate fire correction data which resulted in the additional suppression of enemy mortar fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
