Leroy A. Dike

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Leroy A. Dike for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Dike distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving aboard armed helicopters participating in a combat assault mission fifteen miles south of Rach Gia, Kien Giang Province. During the morning operations, the flight was subjected to intense automatic weapons fire from enemy positions surrounding the landing zone. On each troop insertion, Warrant Officer provided close, accurate suppressive fire into the well-entrenched enemy positions. During the third insertion, several aircraft were damaged from the heavy fire, with one ship being forced down. Reacting immediately, Warrant Officer Dike calmly maneuvered into position to afford optimum protection to the crippled aircraft. Although faced with grave personal danger, he remained on station until the downed crewmembers were extracted and the ship protected. His highly courageous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
