Edgar R Armagost

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Edgar R. Armagost for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Airplane Commander of a B-29 aircraft flying from a base in the Marianas Islands on a night demolition attack on 22 July 1945 against the vital coal liquefaction company at Ube, Japan, one of the leading producers of synthetic oil products in the entire Japanese empire. Despite the many and varied adverse weather conditions encountered enroute to the target, and in defiance of anti-aircraft fire and imminent night fighter opposition, the bombing run was flown determinedly and skillfully. According to radar scope photos, the aircraft was piloted within 500 feet of the exact center of the target. The bombs dropped on this run contributed substantially to the destruction of the productive capacity of this enemy refinery, as established by post-strike photographs. The courageous devotion to duty, perseverance and high individual skill displayed by Captain Armagost, veteran of many assaults against the Japanese homeland, reflect great credit on himself and the Army Air Forces.
