Brian L. Fleming

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Brian L. Fleming for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Fleming distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of an armed helicopter during a mission to support friendly forces at a small fire base north of Bong Son, which was under a heavy mortar attack. Upon reaching the area, it was evident that target acquisition would be difficult due to the dense ground fog which shrouded the valley. The ground commander was contacted and instructed to maintain constant M-60 fire in the direction of the enemy positions. Maneuvering through ground fog and intense enemy fire, the gun team then laid down effective rocket, . . . and minigun fire on the enemy positions. Despite a low fuel status, Lieutenant Fleming remained on station until relieved by an Air Force “Spooky”. Unable to return to his based due to the severe weather, he headed for Phu Cat Air Force Base. An instrument landing was accomplished with only minutes of fuel remaining. Through his courage and sound judgment, the mission was successfully completed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
