Charles V. Ellis

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Charles V. Ellis for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Ellis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving as Aircraft Commander of an armed helicopter engaged in operations with friendly forces near Soc Trang. After receiving heavy automatic weapons fire on two previous sorties, the second and third aircraft received hits forcing them to the ground on their next attempt to make the landing zone. Despite receiving numerous hits himself, he followed the aircraft down to rescue the imperiled crewmembers. After helping the downed crewmembers on board his aircraft, he skillfully piloted his aircraft through low level flight to minimize exposure to enemy fire. He then returned to the landing zone with an insertion of troops to secure the downed aircraft and retrieve vital equipment. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
