James P. Ellman

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant James F. Ellman for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a UC-123 Flight Mechanic near Ca Mau, Republic of Vietnam, on 17 November 1968. On that date, Sergeant Ellman flew a vital defoliation mission against a heavily defended hostile base camp area.  While flying at tree-top level, Sergeant Ellman’s flight received intense hostile ground fire, whereupon he quickly and willingly exposed himself to the continuing fire in order to mark the weapons sites with smoke grenades for fighter strikes, and to provide battle damage reports to the crew, thereby contributing directly to the outstanding success of this vital mission.  The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Ellman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
