Joseph R. Finch

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Joseph R. Finch for heroism while participating in aerial flight. First Lieutenant Finch distinguished himself by heroic actions on 7 September 1969, while serving as a Pilot with Company A, 25th Aviation Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a combat operation, elements of the 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, Lieutenant Finch flew to the contact area to provide aerial support for the infantry unit. Upon arriving on station, Lieutenant Finch began a series of low level passes to determine the location of the hostile emplacements. Having identified the enemy positions, Lieutenant Finch, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the hostile fire, as he placed devastating fire on the aggressors. After expending his supply of ordnance and returning to Cu Chi to rearm his helicopter, Lieutenant Finch continued his aerial assault on the hostile bunkers. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the hostile forces. Lieutenant Finch’s bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
