Matthew H. T. Ferguson

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight on 26 November 1944. Capt Ferguson, while leading a bombing attack on enemy fuel dumps distinguished himself by a display of brilliant leadership and outstanding aerial proficiency. Despite heavy fire from an enemy six-gun position located within range of the target and light overcast which hampered visibility, Capt Ferguson unswervingly led his formation to the objective, and employed evasive action, bombed the target with excellent results. When harassed by enemy jet aircraft after the attack, Capt Ferguson successfully drove them off and led the formation safely back to base. By his extraordinary devotion to duty, Capt Ferguson aided greatly in the destruction of vital enemy objectives and the advancement of allied troops in the area.
