- David C. Barnett
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to David C. Barnett, Warrant Officer WO1, United States Army, 114th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter) Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 30 June 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commanders aboard helicopters supporting friendly ground forces engaged in the defense of their beleaguered compound. Informed that there were no gunships available to render aid to the beleaguered outpost, these men immediately flew to the embattled area and maneuvered their helicopters under withering fire from hostile forces while their crew members placed accurate suppressive fire on enemy mortar positions. When the compound was being assaulted from three different directions, these men boldly reacted by flying their aircraft at tree top level to make repeated strikes against the hostile forces. Disregarding rocket and heavy machine gun fire from enemy positions on a mountain crest, they courageously continued to attack the enemy positions. Through their repeated low passes on the enemy positions, they were able to repulse the enemy attack and saved the ground troops from almost certain destruction from a numerically superior enemy. Their outstanding airmanship and great personal courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United states Army.
