1) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas J. Eller for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. Captain Thomas J. Eller, distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement on 20 October 1966, while serving as pilot of a CV-2 Caribou aircraft during combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Captain Eller was called upon to complete as vital troop lift from Pleiku to An Khe, Republic of Vietnam, as scheduled C-130 aircraft had stopped operations due to adverse weather conditions and poor lighting on the airstrip. Due to his outstanding knowledge of the local terrain, professional competence, diligence, and devotion to duty Captain Eller was able to complete the mission despite the nearly insurmountable hazards and obstacles involved. Captain Eller’s outstanding display of devotion to duty and professional flying ability is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force. *******************

Eller for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander at Landing Zone English and Qui Nhon Army Airfield, Republic of Vietnam on the night of 11 March 1967. On that night, Captain Eller was called out on a vital medical evacuation flight in support of friendly forces that were heavily engaged against hostile forces int the Bong Son Plain. Captain Eller accomplished this life saving mission in spite of the extreme hazards of marginal weather conditions, mountainous terrain and heavy hostile ground fire on final approach at the forward landing area. His courage and determination contributed directly to the saving of several friendly lives. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Eller reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
