- George B. Dom
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to Lieutenant Commander George B. Dom for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot of an FA-18 aircraft while serving with Strike Fighter Squadron 82 embarked in USS AMERICA (CV 66) on 2 February 1991. During Operation DESERT STORM, Lieutenant Commander Dom was the designated Strike Leader of a bombing mission against Iraqi Army tanks, artillery, and armored personnel carriers in the Kuwaiti Theater of Operations. This complex mission covered over 1,500 miles and multiple refueling from United States Air Force KC-135 aircraft. During the mission, he demonstrated outstanding leadership, superb airmanship, and total commitment to mission success. Although a broken cloud deck and heavy black smoke from burning oil wells obscured the primary attack axis, Lieutenant Commander Dom aggressively maneuvered his strike group to achieve target acquisition and coordinated a devastating multi-axis attack. Despite dense enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire and a barrage of surface to air missiles a t the target, numerous tanks, artillery batteries, and Iraqi Army command posts were destroyed. Lieutenant Commander Dom’s stalwart leadership, aggressive performance and courageous devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
