Richard C. Femrite

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Richard C. Femrite, CPT, Btry B 4th Bn (Aerial Arty), 77th Arty (Ambl), USA for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 1 April 1970. Captain Femrite distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of an AH-1G armed helicopter in Thua Thien Providence, Republic of Vietnam. While on a mission over the A Shau Valley, Captain Femrite’s aircraft was downed by intense automatic weapons and anti-aircraft fire. An armed helicopter landed despite hostile fire and evacuated Captain Femrite to a nearby fire base. Captain Femrite returned to the area of contact as pilot of another armed helicopter to prevent the enemy from securing the armament and radio systems of his downed aircraft. While firing rockets and leveling machine gun fire on the downed helicopter, his aircraft was once again hit by automatic weapons fire, and he was ordered to return to base. Captain Femrite’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United states Army.
