William C. Dill

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Mr. William C. Dill for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot (Captain) of the China National Aviation Corporation from 9 October 1944 to 14 August 1945. During this period, Mr. Dill’s exemplary knowledge and outstanding airmanship displayed under extremely hazardous conditions, culminated in highly successful aerial support to Allied military operations flying ‚ÄúHump‚Äù missions between India and China during World War II. With Japanese fighter aircraft on the prowl, the 550+ mile ‚ÄúHump‚Äù flights were extremely hazardous over the world’s toughest terrain, in unpredictable weather conditions, and with poor navigational aids. Mr. Dill completed 97 round trips totaling over 825 flying hours serving as either a co-pilot or first pilot during these very dangerous missions. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Mr. Dill reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
