Richard P. Dodd

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant (junior grade) Richard Patrick Dodd, United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a reconnaissance attack navigator of jet aircraft attached to Reconnaissance Attack Squadron THIRTEEN embarked in USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On 13 November 1972, Lieutenant (junior grade) Dodd skillfully operated the complex systems of the RA5C aircraft so as to successfully complete a long and difficult photographic mission in a heavily defended area. Successfully evading three surface-to-air missiles and heavy anti-aircraft fire, he continued to operate all systems providing necessary information to the pilot which enabled all photographic objectives to be completed. This mission obtained excellent photo coverage of two surface-to-air missile sites, four bridges, and numerous lucrative tactical targets in the Thanh Hoa area. Lieutenant (junior grade) Dodd’s courageous example and aerial skill reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
