Dennis P. Derrig

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Dennis P. Derrig for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot flying light jet attack aircraft in Attack Squadron Fifty-five, a unit of Attack Carrier Air Wing Fourteen embarked in USS Ranger (CVA-61) as a part of Seventh Fleet on 31 January 1966. As Wingman in a flight of four A4E Skyhawks on an armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam, Lieutenant Derrig completed the mission in spite of low ceilings and limited visibility. He successfully and accurately conducted low altitude bombing attacks on the ferry landing south of Dong Hoi inflicting heavy damage and starting several secondary fires. Intense anti-aircraft artillery in the area resulted in major damage to his aircraft and loss of his Section Leader’s aircraft. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Derrig conducted searching passes in the target area until the downed Pilot was located and acted as RESCAP until the Pilot was rescued. Lieutenant Derrig’s aggressiveness, courage, and selfless action were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
