Michael S Dzikowski

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Michael S. Dzikowski for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Dzikowski distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of a UH-1C gunship in support of friendly forces near Tuy Hoa in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 December 1968. While in an attack pattern against an enemy location, his ship received extremely heavy fire and took several rounds in the engine. It was already dark and he began to limp his severely damaged ship to the safety of rice paddies to the east while his crew provided suppressive fire on the enemy locations. When he cleared the final ridge line, Warrant Officer Dzikowski began his descent, but at approximately 150 feet, the engine failed and he entered autorotation. Due to severe rolling action from power surges in the engine, both flyers combined their skills to accomplish a night autorotation in a fully loaded gunship with no injuries to the crew or further damage to the aircraft. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 134th Assault Helicopter Company and the United States Army.
