Orville F. Eiden

Orville F. Eiden, Captain, 416th Bombardment Squadron, 49th Bombardment Group (H), United States Army Air Corp, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a B-17 type aircraft. On 11 January 1944 he led his squadron on a bombing mission against vital enemy installations in Greece. Severe and adverse weather conditions threatened to preclude the successful completion of the mission; however, displaying exceptional leadership, Captain Eiden brought his entire formation directly to the target. Despite aggressive attacks from approximately twenty fighters, together with intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire he courageously led his squadron through the enemy opposition for a highly successful bombing run, inflicting grave damage to the vital enemy industrial center. Turning from the target, under continued enemy opposition, he so skillfully maneuvered his formation that crippled bombers were able to maintain their positions within the protective formations, until fighter escort came to drive off the hostile aircraft, thus enabling all bombers to return safely to base. By his outstanding leadership, professional skill and devotion to duty, together with his personal combat record of over fifty successful missions against the enemy, Captain Eiden reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
