Edward P. Faught

Faught, Edward P., Warrant Officer W01, 213th Aviation Company (Assault Support Helicopter), United States Army is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving aboard cargo aircraft called upon for an emergency night resupply to an Allied mechanized force in the vicinity of Thien Ngon. The Allied force had been in heavy contact with the enemy for three successive days and nights, and had not been resupplied during the period. Morale was low and the situation was extremely critical causing the Allied force commander to declare a tactical emergency. When notified of the mission, these men unhesitatingly volunteered, though fully aware of the precariousness of the situation, and with complete disregard for their own personal safety. The crew was faced with the extremely difficult task of finding a remote landing zone in the total darkness and with no ground reference. Through their superlative professional skill, and extreme sense of duty, these men managed to complete the resupply of desperately needed ammunition and fuel to the besieged Allied force. Their actions were later credited in official dispatches with contributing to turning the tide of battle and assuring an Allied victory. Their performance and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States Army.
